Ways to Save On Your Electric Bill in 2023

We’re all looking for ways to save money on our bills. If you feel like your electric bill is higher than you’d like, we have some tips for you!

Southern California homeowners like yourself often see rising electricity bills, especially in the summer months. Our weather is justifiably famous, but the sunshine and warm temperatures mean more energy usage from air conditioning. We’re all also using more gadgets and appliances these days, which in turn means more electricity.

Fortunately Mauzy Heating, Air & Solar knows how to help our customers find ways to be more energy-efficient and save money on electric bills.

Read on for some easy tips to cut your electricity costs in 2023! Then give us a call at 619-333-8868 or schedule an appointment on our website today.

The Inflation Reduction Act

At the beginning of the year, the 2023 Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) was passed to invest in ways to help Americans reduce the effects of carbon pollution. As part of this effort, the IRA includes tax credits and rebates for homeowners who make energy-efficient changes to their homes, such as upgrading air conditioning, furnaces, heat pumps, and more. In addition to saving money in taxes and getting rebates on purchases and installation, making home upgrades such as these can also lower your electric and other utility bills. 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Tax Credit

The Energy Efficient Home Improvement Tax Credit is an expansion of the 25C tax credit, which allows you to deduct up to 30% of the cost of certain energy-efficient home improvements, up to $3,200 per year. Find out more about the 25C tax credit here.

High Efficiency Electric Home Rebate Act (HEEHRA)

This act offers homeowners as much as $14,000 per year in rebates and covers up to 100% of electrification project costs for low- to moderate- income households who want to install new qualifying efficient electric appliances.

Home Owner Managing Energy Savings (HOMES) Rebate Program

The HOMES rebate program reimburses homeowners for whole-house energy improvements to encourage energy savings. Households that cut energy usage by 20%-35% can save $2000 to $8000 with the HOMES program. The more energy you save, the bigger the rebate!

Check your usage and rate plan

Utility companies may offer a range of rate plans that include cheaper options. Do some research to see what is available to you. It’s possible you’re spending more per month than necessary. It’s a good idea to do some comparison shopping with providers in your area. Once you have that information, you can work with your utility company to see if it makes sense to change your rate plan. Our techs can also recommend energy-efficient changes you can make for potentially significant savings.

Focus on cooling and heating

Another good way to try to reduce your overall energy spending is to take a look at your heating and cooling systems. These are often the biggest consumers of electricity in your home.

The best way to go about this is by switching out your current systems with either a heat pump or more energy-efficient heating and cooling systems. It can be pretty expensive to purchase and replace your appliances, but you’ll save money in the long run the sooner you install appliances that are more energy-efficient. The Inflation Reduction Act has certain provisions specifically for heat pumps in the form of rebates. You can read more about rebates for heat pumps and other energy-efficient systems here.

You can also take easy steps to reduce how much energy these systems use by turning them off or down during lower-peak times. For example, you can turn down your air conditioner at night when temperatures drop, or bump up the temperature a degree or two—both simple ways to take a few dollars off your energy bill. Consider washing your clothes on a warm or cool temperature instead of hot; this can also help you save energy needed to heat the water.

Reduce leakage and energy loss

One of the best ways to immediately reduce your electricity bill is by reducing energy losses and leakages. If you think you might have some energy leaks, give Mauzy Heating, Air & Solar a call to do an inspection. Here are some recommendations to mitigate energy loss that are easy to implement:

  • Fix your insulation in your attic, crawl spaces, or basement.
  • Weatherize your windows, vents, and weather stripping.
  • Update your electronics and appliances with energy-efficient appliances (ideally ones with an Energy Star label) — these may cost a bit upfront, but they’ll save you a ton of money down the road.
  • Replace your lighting, especially older incandescent bulbs with more energy-efficient ones such as LED bulbs.

Go solar

In addition to being great for the environment, installing solar panels can mean significant savings on your energy bill. The average savings for homes with 5 kilowatt solar panels is $100-$150 a month! We at Mauzy are experts in installing solar panels for homeowners across Southern California. If you’ve been thinking about going solar, give us a call today at 619-357-6016.
