PEX Repiping

Our PEX Repiping Process in San Diego

Swapping out your home’s plumbing isn’t like changing a light bulb; it takes serious planning and know-how. Over the last 50 years, we’ve nailed down a process that gets the job done right while keeping your home livable during the work.

First Things First: Sizing Up Your System

We kick things off with a deep dive into your current plumbing setup. One of our licensed pros will crawl through your attic, check under sinks, and trace your water lines. This helps us map out trouble spots and figure out the smartest way to route your new PEX pipes.

Getting Down to Business

Once we’ve got the game plan set, our crew gets to work. We’re careful about protecting your floors and furniture before we open any walls. Then we methodically replace those old pipes with fresh PEX lines, double-checking every connection. We’ll pressure test everything to make sure there’s not a drop of water where it shouldn’t be.

No Mess Left Behind

Most whole-house repipes wrap up in 2-3 days. We handle all the permits, keep the water flowing to key areas when possible, and leave your home cleaner than we found it. That’s just how we do things at Mauzy.

PEX Repiping FAQ

  • What is PEX Repiping and How Does It Work?

What is PEX Repiping and How Does It Work?

PEX isn’t just another plumbing buzzword, it’s a revolutionary piping material that’s changing how we think about home water systems. Unlike rigid copper or rust-prone galvanized pipes, PEX (cross-linked polyethylene) brings flexibility and durability to your home’s plumbing.

Think of PEX as the new kid on the block that’s actually living up to the hype. These pipes can bend around corners without needing extra fittings, expand when frozen without bursting, and resist the mineral buildup that kills traditional pipes. Plus, those smooth interior walls mean better water pressure throughout your house.

The real magic happens in the installation. Instead of soldering joints like copper pipes need, PEX uses secure compression fittings that create watertight seals. This means fewer connection points where leaks could start, and a faster installation process that saves you time and money.

Color-coding makes it simple too: red lines for hot water, blue for cold. This built-in system helps prevent mix-ups and makes future repairs a breeze. The whole setup is like giving your home’s plumbing an upgrade from an old flip phone to the latest smartphone.

Best of all? PEX is rated to last 50+ years under normal conditions. That’s half a century of reliable service without worrying about rusty water or surprise leaks eating away at your walls.

  • How Much Does PEX Repiping Cost in San Diego?

How Much Does PEX Repiping Cost in San Diego?

Let’s be straight, repiping isn’t a small investment, but it’s one that pays off big time in protecting your home and peace of mind. The final cost of your PEX repiping project depends on several key factors unique to your situation.

    Size Matters

Bigger homes with more fixtures naturally need more materials and labor time. A cozy condo might be a quick job, while a sprawling ranch-style home takes more effort to complete.

    Access Points

How easy (or tricky) it is to reach your existing pipes makes a difference. Homes with crawl spaces or accessible attics typically cost less to repipe than those needing extensive wall access.

    Layout Complexity

Multiple stories, number of bathrooms, and special fixtures like wet bars or outdoor kitchens all factor into the equation. The more complex your plumbing system, the more work involved.

    Current Pipe Condition

Sometimes those old pipes don’t want to come out without a fight. Heavily corroded systems might need extra care during removal, which can affect the overall project cost.

The best way to get an accurate picture of your repiping investment? Have one of our pros do a thorough inspection. We’ll walk through your home, assess the situation, and provide a clear, detailed estimate with no hidden surprises.

  • What are the Benefits of Choosing PEX Over Copper for Repiping?

What are the Benefits of Choosing PEX Over Copper for Repiping?

Look, copper pipes had their day in the sun. But just like we’ve moved on from rabbit ear antennas and dial-up internet, plumbing technology has evolved. Here’s why PEX is leaving copper in the dust for San Diego homes.

    Laugh at Cold Snaps

Sure, we’re spoiled with perfect weather most of the time. But when those surprise freezes hit, copper pipes crack like eggs. PEX? It just stretches and bounces back like nothing happened.

    No More Midnight Scares

Remember that loud bang when you shut off the shower? That’s a water hammer in copper pipes. PEX flexes with the pressure changes, so you can finally get through your midnight bathroom trip without waking the whole house.

    Fewer Places to Leak

Here’s the thing about copper every bend needs a joint, and every joint is a potential leak waiting to happen. PEX bends like a gymnast, so we can run longer stretches without connections. Fewer joints mean fewer headaches down the road.

    Tough as Nails

Our San Diego water isn’t exactly gentle on pipes. While copper slowly surrenders to corrosion, PEX stands its ground. No rust, no scale buildup, just clean water year after year.

    Keeps the Heat

Hot water actually stays hot longer in PEX pipes. That means less time waiting for your shower to warm up and lower energy bills. Who doesn’t love saving a few bucks?

    Gets Done Faster

Because PEX is so flexible, we can get your repiping done quicker than with copper. Less time with plumbers in your house means you can get back to normal faster.

  • How Long Does a PEX Repiping Project Take?

How Long Does a PEX Repiping Project Take?

Nobody wants their home turned upside down for weeks on end. The good news? PEX repiping is way faster than you might think. Here’s the real deal on timing:

    Most Jobs: 2-3 Days

For your typical San Diego home, we’re usually wrapped up in about 2-3 days. That includes everything from pulling out those old pipes to testing your shiny new PEX system.

    Breaking it Down:

Day 1: We tackle the main lines and get most of the rough-in work done

Day 2: Hook up fixtures and finish any tricky spots

Day 3: Final connections, testing, and cleanup

    Water Access

We’re not monsters, we know you need water. During the work, we keep your water running to at least one bathroom whenever possible. Most shutoffs only last a few hours, and we’ll give you a heads-up so you can plan ahead.

    What Can Change the Timeline?

    • Bigger homes naturally take longer
    • Tough-to-reach pipes might slow things down
    • Older homes with surprise issues behind the walls
    • Complex layouts with lots of fixtures

The bottom line? We work fast but never rush. Our crew shows up early, works efficiently, and doesn’t call it a day until everything’s running right. That’s just how we roll at Mauzy.

  • Does PEX Piping Last Longer Than Copper or PVC?

Does PEX Piping Last Longer Than Copper or PVC?

When you’re investing in new plumbing, you want pipes that’ll go the distance. Let’s break down how PEX stacks up against the old standbys in San Diego’s unique conditions.

    The Numbers Game

PEX is rated for 50+ years of service life under normal conditions. Copper typically lasts 20-50 years, while PVC clocks in around 25-40 years. But here’s the kicker: those numbers assume perfect conditions, which rarely exist in the real world.

    What Really Kills Pipes

Our local water chemistry can eat through copper pipes in half their expected lifespan. PVC gets brittle with age and sun exposure. But PEX? It shrugs off the chemicals that destroy copper and stays flexible longer than PVC ever could.

    The Pressure Test

Day after day, your pipes take a beating from water pressure changes. Copper can develop pinhole leaks, PVC can crack at joints, but PEX’s natural flexibility handles those pressure swings like a champ.

    Temperature Swings

From scorching attics to those rare freezing nights, San Diego throws some temperature curveballs. While copper and PVC get stressed by these changes, PEX expands and contracts without losing its shape or strength.

The real story isn’t just about how long pipes last, it’s about how well they hold up under actual use. That’s where PEX really shines in San Diego homes.

  • Is PEX Safe for Drinking Water?

Is PEX Safe for Drinking Water?

Let’s cut right to the chase if you want to know if PEX is safe for your family’s drinking water. The short answer? Absolutely. But don’t just take our word for it.

The Proof Is in the Testing

PEX has been put through the wringer by some serious watchdogs. It’s certified by NSF International and meets all EPA standards for drinking water safety. We’re talking about the same folks who test everything from baby bottles to medical equipment.

    Track Record That Counts

While PEX might seem new to some folks, it’s been the go-to choice in Europe since the 1970s. Here in the States, it’s been delivering clean, safe water for over 30 years. That’s billions of gallons of water through millions of homes without any health concerns.

    Better Than The Old Stuff

Remember those old copper pipes? They can leach metals into your water as they age. Galvanized pipes? They rust from the inside out. PEX doesn’t corrode, doesn’t scale up, and doesn’t add any funky tastes or smells to your water.

    Zero Compromises

At Mauzy, we wouldn’t put anything in your home that we wouldn’t use on our own. That’s why we stand behind PEX as the safest, most reliable choice for modern plumbing. Your family’s health isn’t something we take chances with.

  • How Do I Know If My Home Needs PEX Repiping?

How Do I Know If My Home Needs PEX Repiping?

Your plumbing might be crying out for help, but are you catching the signals? Here are the red flags that tell San Diego homeowners it’s time to think about repiping:

    Rusty Water Blues

If your water’s running red or brown, especially when you first turn on the tap, your pipes are literally rusting from the inside out. That rust isn’t just gross, it’s a sign your pipes are on borrowed time.

    Pressure Problems

Low water pressure that keeps getting worse? When old pipes get gunked up with mineral buildup and corrosion, they’re like clogged arteries. If you’re tired of weak showers and slow-filling sinks, your pipes might be ready for retirement.

    Leak After Leak

Finding water spots on your ceiling? Dealing with pipe leaks under sinks? When you’re playing whack-a-mole with leaks, it usually means your whole system is failing, not just one spot.

    Age Isn’t Just a Number

Still running with original pipes from the 60s or 70s? Those systems are way past their prime. Even if you’re not seeing problems yet, you’re living on borrowed time.

    The Money Pit

If your water bills keep creeping up without explanation, hidden leaks might be draining your wallet. Sometimes the most expensive leaks are the ones you can’t see.

    Funky Water

Weird tastes or smells coming from your taps? Old, corroded pipes can make your water taste metallic or give it an odd odor. Your water should be clean and clear, period.

Remember, catching these signs early can save you from a major headache (and a flooded house) down the road. Not sure where your pipes stand? Our pros can take a look and give you the straight scoop.

  • Does PEX Piping Work for Both Hot and Cold Water?

Does PEX Piping Work for Both Hot and Cold Water?

You bet it does and it handles both like a champ. PEX isn’t just good with hot and cold water; it’s actually better at managing temperature extremes than traditional piping.

    Hot Water Hero

PEX keeps your hot water hot longer than copper pipes do. The material naturally insulates better, which means less heat loss as water travels from your water heater to your shower. That’s not just more comfortable, it’s more efficient too.

    Cold Water King

On the flip side, PEX handles cold water without breaking a sweat. Unlike copper pipes that can sweat and drip in our humid San Diego weather, PEX stays dry and condensation-free. No more water spots on your ceiling from sweaty pipes.

    Color-Coded Convenience

We install PEX using an industry-standard color system: red for hot, blue for cold. It’s not just for looks; this simple setup makes future repairs or additions a breeze. No more guessing which line is which behind your walls.

    Temperature Tough

From steamy showers to ice-cold drinking water, PEX handles temperature swings without flinching. While copper expands and contracts (which can lead to leaks), PEX rolls with the changes. It’s like having shock absorbers for your plumbing.

The bottom line? Whether you’re running a hot bath or filling up a cold glass of water, PEX delivers the goods without missing a beat.

  • Can PEX Be Used for Underground Water Lines?

Can PEX Be Used for Underground Water Lines?

You better believe it. PEX isn’t just tough enough for underground use, it’s actually ideal for it. Here’s why more San Diego homeowners are choosing PEX for their underground water lines.

    Built for the Underground

Unlike metal pipes that corrode in soil or rigid PVC that can crack underground movement, PEX flexes with the earth. When the ground shifts (and in San Diego, it does), PEX moves with it instead of fighting back.

    Fewer Underground Joints

Remember what we said about joints being weak points? PEX lets us run longer continuous lines underground. Fewer connections mean fewer spots where roots can work their way in or leaks can develop.

    Soil-Smart

Our local soil can be pretty rough on pipes. But PEX doesn’t rust, doesn’t corrode, and couldn’t care less about aggressive soil conditions. It just keeps doing its job year after year.

Easy Repairs (If You Ever Need Them)

If something does go wrong underground, PEX makes repairs way less painful. No digging up half your yard we can often fix issues with smaller access points. That means your landscaping stays intact.

    The Freeze Factor

Even though underground freezing is rare in San Diego, PEX has got you covered when temperatures drop. While copper and PVC can split open, PEX expands and contracts without damage.

Bottom line? For underground water lines, PEX isn’t just an option, it’s often the smartest choice you can make.

  • Will PEX Repiping Improve My Water Pressure?

Will PEX Repiping Improve My Water Pressure?

If weak showers and sluggish faucets are driving you mad, here’s some good news: PEX repiping often brings a serious boost to your water pressure. Let’s break down why.

    Smooth Operator

Old pipes get gunked up inside over time, think of it like cholesterol in arteries. PEX pipes have super-smooth inner walls that stay that way. Water flows faster and stronger without all that buildup slowing it down.

    No More Pinhole Problems

Those tiny leaks in old copper pipes? They’re like having a bunch of tiny holes in a garden hose. Each one steals a bit of pressure. Fresh PEX lines are leak-free, so all that pressure makes it to where it needs to go.

    Smart Sizing

When we repipe your house, we don’t just copy the old layout. We size every line exactly right for modern fixtures and your home’s needs. Proper pipe sizing means better flow to every tap in the house.

    Less Resistance

PEX’s flexible design means fewer sharp turns and elbows that can slow water down. Think of it like replacing a twisty mountain road with a smooth highway traffic just flows better.

But here’s the straight talk: if your low pressure comes from city supply issues or an aging water main, new pipes can only help so much. That’s why we always check your whole system before making promises about pressure improvement.

  • Do I Need a Permit for PEX Repiping in San Diego?

Do I Need a Permit for PEX Repiping in San Diego?

Short answer? Yes. But don’t sweat it, we handle all that paperwork headache for you. Here’s the deal with permits in San Diego.

    Playing By The Rules

San Diego takes plumbing permits seriously, and for good reason. They make sure the work’s done right and your home stays safe. Any major plumbing overhaul like repiping needs proper permits and inspections.

    We’ve Got You Covered

After 50 years working in San Diego, we know the permit process inside and out. Our team handles everything from filing the paperwork to scheduling inspections. You don’t have to deal with any of the red tape.

    Why Permits Matter

    • Keeps your home insurance valid
    • Protects your property value
    • Ensures work meets local codes
    • Prevents headaches if you sell later

    The Inspection Process

Once the work’s done, city inspectors check everything out. They’re looking for proper installation, correct materials, and code compliance. Our work passes inspection the first time, that’s just how we do things.

    Skip the Permit? Bad Move

Some folks try to save a few bucks by skipping permits. Trust us, that’s asking for trouble. Unpermitted work can mean fines, repairs, or major hassles when you try to sell. Not worth the risk.

We had a challenging AC leak issue on a relatively new system that was very frustrating and costly. We would pay several hundred dollars to fill up the refrigerant, two different techs would poke around and say they didn’t find a leak and say it’s fine. Then less than a month later we would be down the pounds again and cost us money to refill.

We asked Mauzy send their best guy out to resolve this once and for all so they sent Mike Mittman. Super nice, friendly guy. Very understanding of our frustration. Took him an hour or so to pin point the leak, showed us the leak, demonstrated to us the leaking sound and repaired it, refilled the refrigerant!

Thank you so much Mike!

5

We discovered a water leak in my office and found Mauzy Plumbing (formerly Sherlock) on Yelp. They responded quickly and got Tommy Clementi out to inspect the problem. This led to leak discovery and repair, and we spoke with Tommy about how to best protect our 35-year-old plumbing from future failure (as much as possible, at any rate). This led to a new pressure regulating valve, a whole-home water filter, and a Moen Flo auto-shutoff valve that monitors water flow and shuts the system off if it sees out-of-the-ordinary flow. Not exactly cheap, but we feel it is good insurance. Then we realized our hot water tank was old and losing capacity so we had them replace the old tank with a new tankless on-demand system. We’ve had it for a couple of weeks now and it’s working well. Altogether a very positive experience over several weeks with several different technicians, all of whom were on-time and professional. The options were explained well and all costs were clear up-front with no surprises. Thanks Mauzy – a great job and much appreciated!

5

Kyle came out for my yearly inspection of my HVAC. He was very detailed about checking everything and very knowledgeable. I would highly recommend Kyle

5

Christian did a good job and kept in contact with me so I knew what was going on since I was not at the house. I really appreciated that.

5

I thought Darren did a fabulous job. He even fixed a small wiring issue without having to be asked. I appreciated that so much. Thanks again, Darren!

5

Professional young man, did a thorough job, took the time to explain everything he did and answered all my questions.

5

Brandon was very professional and did a great job taking care of the issue.

I highly recommend Brandon and Mauzy for all of your plumbing maintenance and repairs.
