What does an Elite by Mauzy HVAC surge protector do?

Often overlooked and much like a surge protector for your TV, an HVAC surge protector protects your system from hundreds of power surges that occur throughout the year. The surge protector redirects high voltage surges, like those from lightning, into the ground and away from your HVAC system. There are other sources of power surges, such as those coming from your home appliances, which can cause damage to your system over time.

How does it work?

An Elite by Mauzy HVAC surge protector interrupts energy spikes to keep your system safe by:

  • Diverting excess energy away from the system
  • Breaking the electrical circuit to block overloads

When a small power spike occurs, the Elite by Mauzy surge protector blocks the excess charge to the system’s grounding wire, keeping the unit connected but safe. If there is a large power surge, the surge protector detects the excess energy and immediately cuts power to it. The surge protector is then destroyed, keeping your unit protected and safe to operate.

Do I need a surge protector for each unit?

Yes, it is highly recommended to install a surge protector for your air conditioner and one for your furnace. As each unit is powered separately, installing a surge protector for each keeps both your AC and heater protected.

We had a challenging AC leak issue on a relatively new system that was very frustrating and costly. We would pay several hundred dollars to fill up the refrigerant, two different techs would poke around and say they didn’t find a leak and say it’s fine. Then less than a month later we would be down the pounds again and cost us money to refill.

We asked Mauzy send their best guy out to resolve this once and for all so they sent Mike Mittman. Super nice, friendly guy. Very understanding of our frustration. Took him an hour or so to pin point the leak, showed us the leak, demonstrated to us the leaking sound and repaired it, refilled the refrigerant!

My technician Kory, was great. He was very thorough, nice and helpful. Explained everything really well he took pictures and showed me the problem areas. The maintenance price is reasonable. Repair prices are on the high end but that is separate from the services received.

Corey came out for my annual heater system check up and was thorough and very nice and left everything nice and clean. It was an equally positive experience when he did the ac check up in Spring. I have a contract to check systems yearly so there wasn’t a charge for the visit. Having the contract makes sure I don’t skip a year a two as has happened in the past!

We discovered a water leak in my office and found Mauzy Plumbing (formerly Sherlock) on Yelp. They responded quickly and got Tommy Clementi out to inspect the problem. This led to leak discovery and repair, and we spoke with Tommy about how to best protect our 35-year-old plumbing from future failure (as much as possible, at any rate). This led to a new pressure regulating valve, a whole-home water filter, and a Moen Flo auto-shutoff valve that monitors water flow and shuts the system off if it sees out-of-the-ordinary flow. Not exactly cheap, but we feel it is good insurance. Then we realized our hot water tank was old and losing capacity so we had them replace the old tank with a new tankless on-demand system. We’ve had it for a couple of weeks now and it’s working well. Altogether a very positive experience over several weeks with several different technicians, all of whom were on-time and professional. The options were explained well and all costs were clear up-front with no surprises. Thanks Mauzy – a great job and much appreciated!
